HAVE YOUR CAKE AND NIGHTMARES TOO

So you’re feeling a bit hungry and nibble on a slice of carrot cake before going to bed.

The cloying sweetness lingers in your mouth as you drift off to sleep, but in about two hours you are awakened by a terrifying nightmare, and you’re sweating and feeling mildly nauseous. You get up, exhausted, but also wanting to eat. You head to the kitchen and grab a cookie. Now you are fully awake and can’t get back to bed until 4:00, and you need to get up by 6:00 to get to work…

That nightmare wasn’t caused by the scary movie you saw, but by a severe drop in blood sugar due to that piece of cake. Anything sugary before bedtime is a trigger for blood sugar imbalance, which can lead to hypoglycemia (a drop in blood sugar). The nightmare alarms you to get up and get some glucose, thus you feel the urgency to wake up and eat. If this is happening to you, stop eating for at least three hours before going to bed.
